Kindermusik

7 years ago, my eldest son was part of Teacher Jeannie's 1st Kindermusik Class here in Manila. He was 6 months old then. A number of relatives and friends raised their eyebrows upon hearing that I was sending my baby to school?

"Ano na naman bang kalokohan yan?"
"Wala naman magagawa ang baby, papasok pa nang school"

I have supportive relatives no?

I must admit that when we registered, I didn't read up on the program. I was supposed to enroll my son at Gymboree when our Developmental pediatrician, Dr. Francis Xavier Dimalanta, recommended Kindermusik.

"Mas maganda ang Kindermusik" he said.

So off to Kindermusik class we went. A class will start with a hello song, followed by a short massage session then songs and dancing. Your child will be exposed to a a vast collection of baby-friendly instruments and materials. The music selection is just as impressive ranging from nursery rhymes, jazz, blues, classical even folk songs.

What fun!

We were given Take-home Materials, storybook and music CD, to continue our sessions at home. Hubby and I are both working, so our son would also do the Kindermusik activities with yaya.

What I loved and appreciated was the fact that the Kindermusik class empowered me as a parent. I learned a lot about my baby's progress and development. We became more confident in raising our son because Teacher Jeannie would give us information and tips on parenting.

In hindsight, it shouldn't just be called a baby class. It really is a Parent Empowering Series. I believe it is a must for 1st-time parents. It just made our family bond stronger. We were really taught how to be in tune with our baby. I believe in it so much that I even studied to be an educator.

Yes, I am a US-Licensed Kindermusik Educator and I teach classes in my school. If that doesn't prove how much I believe in the program, I don't know what else will.

I am writing about this know because we're back with Teacher Jeannie!!! My 10 month old son is enrolled at the Village Class (6 months-1.5 years old). Super fun fun fun! We have such a blast in class that my eldest who's now 7 years old, insists on attending the class with us every week.

If you have a child 7 years old and below, check out her classes. They schedule trial classes regularly anyway. Go and attend!

Find out what do babies learn in class anyway.

Have you attended any Mommy/Daddy and Me class? How was it?

When is the Right Time for Pre-School?

I get asked this a lot.  My answer?

If you are after socialization, then starting at 2 years old isfine.  If parents are just after academics, waiting until your child is 4 years old will be better.

A number of schools, including my own, offer structured Play classes for 2-3 year olds.  A lot of grandparents balk at this notion.  They think that’s way too early for schooling.  “Baka magsawa agad” is the most common reaction.

It will really all depend in what kind of class you put your toddler in.  If you put him or her in a play based-child-centered program then I am confident your child will thrive.  If it’s an academic traditional setting, then it’s not yet appropriate for toddlers.

In my opinion, socialization is the single greatest developmental benefit to be gained from a good preschool experience. There are many other emotional and intellectual benefits provided by a child-centered preschool program. I would add that a loving home will provide a child as fine an opportunity for growth as any preschool. The key difference in the home and preschool socialization experiences usually is the degree to which a child has the opportunity to interact with her peers.

At home, because of any number of circumstances, a child may have little opportunity to play, learn, share, or otherwise interact with other children of similar ages. In a preschool that opportunity is built in every day.

Your child will learn that he or she is not the center of the universe, that he should fall in line, share, take turns and follow teacher.  Those important socialization skills will be hard to learn if your child won’t exposed to kids his own age.

I always call socialization, magic.  You can’t put a finger on it but you will really see and feel the difference with your child.  The changes are really noticeable.  So far, the parents of the 2-3 year olds in my school are very happy with the development of their kids.  Most common statement:

“ay teacher bumait na sya, marunong na syang makipag-laro”.

Good socialization skills are key to being successful in school, and eventually, out in the working world too right?  So if you have the means to send your child to a structured play class, by all means do so.  It is important for children to be around other children.

How about you,  what do you think school is for: academics or socialization?

Safe, Toxic-free Play Dough

To cap off my toxic-free series, I will share how we make our own play-dough in our school.  Yes, we make our own.  We don't buy at all because the kids' bare skin are exposed to the product.  Making our own, just gives us that peace of mind :)

These are all tried and tested recipes, so feel free to make them at home with your kids.  Some require cooking and some don't; some are meant to be eaten and some are not. Choose the recipe that best suits your needs and the ingredients you have on hand. Store playdough in a covered container or Ziploc bag. If it sweats a little, just add more flour. For sensory variety, use playdough warm or cool as well as at room temperature.

Uncooked Playdough

  • Bowl
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • Tempera paint or food coloring
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
Directions
  1. In bowl, mix water, salt, oil, and enough tempera paint or food coloring to make a bright color.
  2. Gradually add flour and cornstarch until the mixture reaches the consistency of bread dough.
  3. Store covered.
Colored Playdough

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • Food coloring
  • Saucepan
  • 1 cup flour
Directions
  1. Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
  2. Remove from heat and add flour.
  3. Stir, then knead until smooth. The cream of tartar makes this dough last 6 months or longer, so resist the temptation to omit this ingredient if you don't have it on hand.
  4. Store this dough in an airtight container or a Ziploc freezer bag.
Salt Playdough

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup flour plus additional flour
  • Saucepan
Directions
  1. Mix salt, water, and flour in saucepan and cook over medium heat.
  2. Remove from heat when mixture is thick and rubbery.
  3. As the mixture cools, knead in enough flour to make the dough workable.
Oatmeal Playdough

  • 1 part flour
  • 1 part water
  • 2 parts oatmeal
  • Bowl
Directions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl; mix well and knead until smooth.
  2. This playdough is not intended to be eaten, but it will not hurt a child who decides to taste it.
  3. Store covered in refrigerator.
  4. Your child can make this playdough without help; however, it doesn't last as long as cooked playdough.
Peanut Butter Playdough

  • 2 cups peanut butter
  • 6 tablespoons honey
  • Nonfat dry milk or milk plus flour
  • Cocoa or carob for chocolate flavor (optional)
  • Edible treats for decoration
Directions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix, adding enough dry milk or milk plus flour to reach the consistency of bread dough.
  2. Add cocoa or carob, if desired.
  3. Shape, decorate with edible treats, and eat!
Kool-Aid Playdough

  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 cups water
  • Saucepan
  • Food coloring, tempera powder, or Kool-Aid powder for color
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 2 tablespoons alum
Directions
  1. Combine salt and water in saucepan and boil until salt dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat and tint with food coloring, tempera powder, or Kool-Aid.
  3. Add oil, flour, and alum.
  4. Knead until smooth.
  5. This dough will last 2 months or longer.

Cleaning W/O Chemicals

Save money and your lungs by using these homemade detergents.

There's nothing like giving your home a good scrub-down in the springtime; it just feels like the perfect time of year to start fresh and new. But spring cleaning often involves serious cleanup jobs that require hefty chemicals to complete — or do they? The truth is, even the nastiest stains and spills can be taken care of with natural, nontoxic cleaning products and some elbow grease.
And even if you're not exactly Suzy Homemaker, you can DIY a lot of these cleaners easily with stuff you probably already have in your home. Tackle the dirt, dust and disorder and avoid toxic products at the same time with these green spring-cleaning recipes.

Greasy ovens: All that food grease that drips onto the bottom of the oven eventually turns into a disgusting black sludge. Attack it with the following recipe: Mix a half cup salt, a box of baking soda, a quarter cup borax, and a cup of water into a paste. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees, then turn it off and apply the paste with a sponge. Let it sit for half an hour, then spray it down using vinegar mixed with 10 drops of lemon essential oil, and wipe clean. (Recipe via The Naturally Clean Home, Karyn Siegel-Maier)
Crusty refrigerators and microwaves: Mix baking soda with 1 part warm water to 1 part lemon juice, adding just enough liquid to make a paste. Rub it into caked-on food and then wipe with a clean cloth — it will deodorize as well as dissolve caked-on food. Did a cup of tomato soup or some other kind of food explode inside your microwave? That calls for something a little tougher: Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice in a cup of water and microwave for five minutes or until the liquid boils over, then wipe down.
Stinky garbage disposals: There's a foul odor in your kitchen, and it's not coming from the trash can. Chances are, if you've got a garbage disposal, it's the culprit. Less-than-pleasant smells wafting from the drain can be eliminated by tossing in some ice cubes and citrus peels and running the disposal. It'll freshen up the smell and sharpen the blades at the same time.

Mildewed grout and tile: Few things are as unpleasant as being trapped in a small bathroom gagging on the smell of chemicals while you're trying to clean. To tackle mold and mildew without harsh, toxic cleaners, first mix one part hydrogen peroxide (3 percent solution) with two parts water in a spray bottle and spray the affected area. Let it sit for an hour. Next, mix a cup of baking soda with just enough natural liquid detergent (like castile soap) to create a paste. Give it a good scrub and your tile will look as good as new.
Clogged drains: Just half a cup of baking soda followed by boiling water is usually enough to break up clogs, but when you need to bring out the big guns, follow the baking soda with vinegar instead of water. Yes, it's just like an elementary school science project and will fizz and bubble wildly, but it works. Flush it out with a gallon of boiling water.
Dingy toilets and sinks: Stubborn rings in the toilet and dingy soap-scum-covered basins can be brightened up with borax and lemon juice. Mix enough lemon juice with borax — a natural mineral — to create a paste. Rub it onto the dingy spots, let it sit for a couple hours and then flush.
Stained carpets and upholstery: Baking soda is magic when it comes to removing stains and eliminating odors in textiles, including rugs, carpets and drapery. Gently rub a liberal amount of baking soda into the spot, let it sit overnight and vacuum it up. For heavy-duty stains, mix a quarter cup each of borax, salt and vinegar, rub the mixture onto the stain, leave for a few hours and then vacuum.

Even pet urine can be dealt with naturally: Just dab up as much excess moisture as you can with a towel, rub in some liquid detergent and rinse with a bit of vinegar diluted in warm water. Dab with a towel and allow it to sit for at least four hours, then blot again.

Safe Non-toxic School

As parents start shopping for school supplies in time for the opening of classes next month, a waste and pollution watchdog has called on concerned government authorities to conduct a random testing of school supplies for chemicals which may be harmful to their children.

At the same time, Mother Earth Foundation EcoWaste Coalition also cautioned parents in their choice of bags, notebooks and other school supplies that have proliferated in shopping malls which may be hazardous to one’s health.  “It is the responsibility of parents to make informed choices that will protect their children, who are most vulnerable to chemical exposure, from toxins that are lurking in school supplies that they use every day,” Sonia Mendoza, a retired chemist and a member of the Mother Earth Foundation and the EcoWaste Coalition, said.  cont...

Toxic chemicals in our children's schools are a big concern for me as a parent and a teacher as well.  To do our share, we consciously use organic and non-toxic cleaners in our school.  It might cost a little more but you can't put a price on our student's health.

These are some examples.  They're so simple, you can do it at home too.
  • We use natural products for cleaning agents such as baking soda, soda ash, vinegar, and cream of tarter. A variety of nontoxic products can be found in health food stores and some supermarkets.
  • We only use genuine Citronella or Lemongrass oils to ward off mosquitoes.  We never ever use the conventional bugsprays available.

  • We check labels carefully and keep all hazardous products well-marked and away from children. Check to see if  school  appliances, toys, and learning materials are hazardous.

  • We import our paints from a manufacturer in the US.  We are guaranteed its safe, washable and non-toxic.  As much as possible, we refrain from buying paint made in China because we are just not sure about its safety.

  • The same goes for crayons and other coloring materials.  We recommend Crayola and Rose Art products because their companies undergo strict monitoring from government agencies.

  • We keep our playing and learning areas, including the kitchen and bathroom, clean and safe.

How about you?   How do you make sure your kids are toxic free?
